Prepirineo Navarro

En las montañas del pirineo Navarro encontramos relieves más suaves e idóneos para excursiones sencillas que en el alto pirineo y que en nada desmerecen a sus vecinas más altas. En esta excursión contamos con la compañía de Clara y Arkadi, por fin, ya que teníamos pendiente hacer algo desde hace tiempo. 
El buen tiempo nos acompaña aunque precisamente por ello las hojas de las hayas aun no han cambiado de color a pesar de estar a finales de Octubre.
Empezamos la excursión por Orbaitzeta, subimos a la fábrica de armas y cogemos la pista, hacemos la ruta circular del castillo pero al revés ya que el desnivel es más suave (en realidad nos saltamos el desvío y ya puestos decidimos seguir).

On the mountains of the Navarre pyrenees we find lower summits and easier excursions than in the higher part of the range but there are really beautifull places too. This time we share this experience with our friends Clara and Arkadi.
The weather is nice and the beech are not changing the colours even in the end of October.
The excursion starts in Orbaitzeta´s gun factory where we take a track to walk the circular way to the castle.

A pesar de llegar pronto al cambio de hoja los colores del bosque son increíbles y cientos de tonos de verde nos rodean.

Despite of been too early to see the beech changing the leaves the colours of the forrest are amazing anyway.

En esta excursión tuvimos un poco de todo, encontramos bastantes setas entre ellas gran cantidad de Galampernas o Macrolepiotas (Macrolepiota procera). Vimos también varios hongos que desafortunadamente tuvimos que dejar en su sitio ya que ni llevábamos cesta ni sabíamos si la zona estaba acotada. 

This time we had a bit of everything, we found many different mushrooms like these Macrolepiota procera and some Boletus but we had to leave them there because we did not know if this place is protected.

También nos encontramos rastros claros de jabalí (Sus scrofa) en un árbol y hasta el puñadito de pelos dejado posiblemente por un ciervo(Cervus elaphus)(por la altura y color).

We also saw some clear traces of wild boar (Sus scrofa)on a tree and even a small bit of red deer (Cervus elaphus) hair (acording to the height and colour).

Preciosas vistas cada vez que el bosque se abría un poco. 

We got a nice view when the forrest opens for a while.

Como os decíamos esta excursión tiene un poco de todo incluida la visita a las pequeñas cuevas de Lutoa con sorpresa incluida en forma de pequeños murciélagos (Pipistrelus pipistrelus creo).

As we said this excursion has a bit of everything, including Lutoa caves with some little inhabitants, some pipistrels (Pipistrelus pipistrelus).

Y para acabar una de grupo y mañana más en otro bonito hayedo, Sorogain.

Al día siguiente, domingo, Sorogain estaba lleno de gente pero aun y así el sitio es de cuento. Nos queda pendiente subir a los dolmenes y curiosear más la zona, ya que íbamos justos de tiempo. Aun y así pudimos hacer fotos chulas y ver varias hayas tremendas.

Next day, Sunday, Sorogain was full of people but even though it is like a fairy tale. We where sort of time so we walk for a while, took some nice pictures of huge beech.

San Donato: Desnivel, hayas y buitres

San Donato, a pocos kilómetros de Pamplona es una bonita pero exigente excursión. 
Atravesando sus bellos hayedos y salvando un desnivel de aproximadamente 1000 metros se llega a un amplio altiplano con varias formaciones kársticas.

Después de la larga ascensión se agradece andar en llano, bordeamos el acantilado hasta la cima a pocos metros de la ermita que corona la montaña.

Por el camino nos sobrevuelan buitres constantemente, merece la pena madrugar para llegar temprano y verlos remontar las térmicas en sus laderas.

Alimoche, un poco lejos pero aun se ve que esta mudando plumas.

Ademas entre buitres pudimos ver varias veces al alimoche que también habita estos cortados.




San Donato, just few kilometers away from Pamplona it is a beatifull but hard excursion.
We start the ascension through beech forests and saving a difference of nearly 1000 meters where we will arrive to a plateau full of karstic shapes.

También vimos alguna orquídea, Orchis langei.

We also saw some orchids, Orchis langei.

After the long climb it is nice to walk in the plains, the path goes surrounding the cliffs to the summit.
On the way Griffon vultures fly over our heads, It is worth to get up early to be able to see them looking for thermic currents.

We also saw few times Egyptian vultures flying with their bigger cousins.

Gallocanta, una excursión pendiente.

Gallocanta es una laguna salobre en mitad de un altiplano, hábitat perfecto para que miles de grullas (Grus grus) pasen el invierno allí. Sin embargo tal y como nos contaron un par de lugareños muy agradables y acogedores, llegábamos una  semana tarde, los últimos miles se marcharon el fin de semana antes. Al menos aun pudimos ver unas cuantas que iban con retraso y disfrutar de las otras maravillas que ofrece esta laguna.

Gran cantidad de anatidas, entre ellas una importante colonia de Tarros blancos (Tadorna tadorna) que crían allí lo cual es reseñable porque este gran pato a penas cría en la península y allí lo hace a cientos. Pero además pudimos ver ánades reales (Anas platyrhynchos), patos cuchara (Anas clipeata), ánades frisos (Anas strepera) y porrones (Aytya ferina) en cantidad. Muchas limícolas entre las que destacamos un bando de avocetas (Recurvirostra avosetta), avefrías (Vanellus vanellus) y buena cantidad de andarríos (Actitis hypoleucos). 

 También presenciamos una situación poco común cuando un buitre leonado (Gyps fulvus) se poso a unos metros del pueblo en el tejado de una caseta, luego vimos que era un ejemplar joven probablemente cansado y ya que esos llanos no propician buenos posaderos tuvo que adaptarse a lo que había.

Ya el domingo empezamos la vuelta a Pamplona bien temprano con idea de parar en la laguna de Pitillas también con gran cantidad de anátidas y limícolas entre los que destacaremos 3 o 4 parejas de pato colorado (Netta rufina) en pleno cortejo y muchísimas cogujadas (Galerida cristata) en los campos de alrededor.

Así que queda pendiente otra excursión a ver a las grullas en su apogeo, menos mal que el otoño que viene ya estarán de vuelta porque ya estamos con ganas de repetir.

Gallocanta is a salty lagoon in the middle of a plateau, a perfect habitat for cranes (Grus grus) for wintering. But, as some friendly villagers told us we were a week late, the last thousands left the week before. At least we could see some of the last and enjoy other wonders in this magical place.

A big quantity of ducks, including a big breeding colony of shelducks (Tadorna tadorna). But we could also see mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), shovelers (Anas clipeata), gadwalls (Anas strepera) and pochards (Aytya ferina). We also saw big numbers of waders where we want to highlight a flock of avocets (Recurvirostra avosetta), lapwings (Vanellus vanellus) and common sandpipers (Actitis hypoleucos). We also saw an infrequent situation when a young gryphon vulture (Gyps fulvus) landed in the roof of a barn few meters away from the village, probably exhausted without big the cliffs that they use to rest.

On Sunday we started going back to Pamplona early because we planned to stop at Pitillas lagoon where we saw a good quantity of waders and ducks within the most remarkable were 3 or 4 couples of red crested pochards (Netta rufina) and lots of crested larks (Galerida cristata) feeding in the nearby fields.

So we have to repeat this great travel again to see the cranes in their best time, at least they come again every autumn so we will try again.

Orquídeas del anillo verde de Vitoria

Bienvenidos al anillo verde de Vitoria-Gasteiz. Una de las múltiples maravillas que encierra esta serie de parques que rodean la capital Alavesa es su biodiversidad y dentro de esta las más de 40 especies de orquídeas salvajes. En este post solo utilizaremos nombres científicos ya que los nombres comunes en estas plantas varían mucho de unas regiones a otras. Esta primavera esperamos volver a verlas ¡Ven con nosotros!

Welcome to the Green Ring on Vitoria-Gasteiz. One of wonders among these parks around the city is their amacing biodiversity and within this biodiversity the wild orchids are remarkable. In this post we will use only the scientific names because the common names are usually different in different places. We are looking forward to see them again next Spring. So, come with us!

Picos de Europa

Que decir de los picos de Europa, uno de los lugares más sobrecogedores que hemos visitado, con una naturaleza increíble y una gastronomía que por si sola bien merece una visita. En este Parque Nacional podemos encontrar especies tan emblemáticas como el lobo (Canis lupus), el oso pardo (Ursus arctos), el urogallo (Tetrao urogallus)  y algún que otro quebrantahuesos (Gypaetus barbatus) entre otros muchos endemismos y especies raras y/o interesantes. Os dejamos unas fotos para que juzguéis vosotros mismos.

What to say about Picos de Europa, one of the most awesome places we have ever been, with a incredible nature and gastronomy which alone is well worth a visit. In this National Park we can found emblematic species such as wolfs (Canis lupus), brown bear  (Ursus arctos), capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) and some erratic Bearded vultures (Gypaetus barbatus) and many other endemisms and rare or interesting species. Como reza el titulo sed bienvenidos a Free-excursions. Antes de nada me presento, me llamo Carlos y soy biólogo y si os interesa la idea estaré más que encantado de mostraros las maravillas que os rodean y que probablemente no conozcáis.

Os cuento de que va la cosa, a mi me encanta el campo y buscaba una forma de salir de excursión con más gente, compartir experiencias, vivencias…algo que me permitiera combinar trabajo con mi gran pasión que es la naturaleza ¿porque no un servicio de guía de campo? 

Viendo el resto de la oferta del sector vi que casi toda se centraba en sitios concretos como parques nacionales o sitios por el estilo. Además muchos no resultan muy asequibles para lo que en realidad es una actividad de senderismo y me dije, quizás eso sea lo que yo puedo ofertar que el resto no puede. 

La cuestión es que yo no cobro ninguna tarifa establecida, mi tarifa mínima son mis gastos de desplazamiento. A partir de ahí en función de lo que os guste la experiencia, de lo bien que os haya caído, de lo que os podáis permitir, o sin más de lo que os de la gana, cuando acabemos estaré encantado de aceptar alguna propina, no os cortéis jeje.

Otra de las cosas que yo puedo ofrecer y otros quizás no es que yo no soy un guía de montaña, yo interpreto la naturaleza para vosotros. No tengo rutas prefijadas entre las que tengáis que elegir (lo cual no quiere decir que no me prepare antes de ir) si no que sois vosotros los que elegís qué queréis ver o hacer y a partir de ahí ya lo hablamos para organizarnos. Os interesan los pájaros, yo me encargo, queréis ver orquídeas yo os llevo donde hayan unas cuantas, queréis disfrutar de bonitas vistas, árboles milenarios… vosotros decidís, soy totalmente flexible. Decidme que queréis y yo me encargo del resto. Por mi formación y experiencia mi especialidad es la ecología y la ornitología si bien, después de horas y horas en el campo uno sabe un poco de todo, desde plantas a rastros  y huellas.

Lo normal es trabajar con grupos, asociaciones, etc…pero todo el mundo es bienvenido. También debéis tener en cuenta que en el caso de la fauna generalmente más gente implica más ruido y menos avistamientos. Hasta ahora trabajaba en Alicante si bien me mudo al norte así que ahora andaré por la zona del País Vasco y Navarra (es importante para calcular tu presupuesto saber donde ando ¿no?)

As the title suggests, you are very welcome to free-excursions.blogspot.com.es. First of all let me introduce myself, my name is Carlos, I’m a Biologist and I would be more than happy to show you the hidden wonders that surround you.
Let me explain my idea. I love the countryside and I was looking for a way to make field trips with more people, share experiences and have fun... something that allows me to mix my job with my greatest passion, nature. Why not offer the service of guided walks?

Looking at the existent guided walk offers, I saw that most of them were centred near National Parks or similar places and moreover, most of them were not very affordable. And I thought, maybe I can offer you what others can not. 
I do not have any fixed rates, you just have to pay my travel expenses. Eventually If you enjoyed the experience, and depending on how much you can afford or whatever you want I will be very pleased to accept tips. Don’t hesitate to do so. Hehe!
Other special things that I can offer and maybe others can not, is that I’m not a mountain guide, I will interpret the nature for you. I don’t have any prefixed programme (I will prepare myself for the specific place), you will be the ones who choose what to see and what to do and with that I will help you to decide where to go and when is the best time. For example, are you interested in birds? Just choose which ones you want to see and leave it to me. Interested in Orchids? I know where we can find some. Or maybe you just want to enjoy amazing scenery or centenary trees? You just have to choose, I’m totally flexible. Just say what you want and let me do the hard work. Through my studies and personal interests I am more focused on ecology and ornithology, but after hours and hours out there one knows a bit of everything, from plants to traces and droppings (which is usually the most common way to “see” mammals).

I am used to working with associations and groups but everyone is welcome, but obviously the more people the cheaper. You should also be aware that for wildlife more people implicates more noise, and fewer sightings.
Until now I worked in Alicante but I am moving to the north and so I will be around the Basque country and Navarra (It is important to know where I am to make a budget right?).
